We are aware of the China Labor Watch report and take their allegations very seriously. We require all Hasbro products to be manufactured in accordance with rigorous ethical standards, and that all third party facilities ensure employees have a healthy and safe working environment. Hasbro combines industry best practices, strategic partnerships, and strict auditing standards to respect the safety, well-being, and dignity of workers, and works continuously to ensure compliance with all third party facilities. We are working closely with the ICTI CARE Foundation, which is conducting a thorough investigation at the five factories covered in the China Labor Watch report.

Immediately following some unsubstantiated allegations posted by an outside group regarding working conditions at the Jet Fair factory, Hasbro, together with ICTI, deployed a team to investigate, as we take such claims very seriously. Following an unannounced, nine-hour inspection of the facility this past week, we are satisfied that Jet Fair meets with Hasbro's rigorous requirements.

While Hasbro is committed to continual improvement in all facets of corporate social responsibility, including continued ethical product manufacturing at Jet Fair and all factories that produce Hasbro products, the inflammatory allegations made by the NGO in their report were unsubstantiated by our investigation. As a matter of course, Hasbro will continue to monitor conditions at Jet Fair and all of our factories.

The Company has a strong track record and has had long-standing policies and processes in place for years to help ensure good working conditions, including health and safety, at factories making our products. We strive to conduct business throughout our supply chain in accordance with the highest ethical standards, and we utilize not only ICTI-- but also our own on-the-ground workforce-- to monitor social compliance.

Hasbro, Inc. today announced its commitment to using clean and renewable resources in an effort to accelerate progress towards the company’s 2020 sustainability goals. For the2014 calendar year, Hasbro purchased carbon offsets and renewable energy certificates (RECs) to reduce the environmental impacts of its global owned/operated operations.

Hasbro purchased carbon offsets equivalent to the 9,965 metric tons CO2e associated with its global onsite fuel use, non-U.S. electricity consumption and U.S. employee business travel in 2014. This commitment to offset C02e through landfill gas capture was verified through Climate Action Reserve (CAR) and will reduce Hasbro’s greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) equal to growing 255,513 trees for 10 years or not using 23,174 barrels of oil.

Additionally, the company purchased 9,319 megawatt-hours of Green-e® Energy Certified RECs which represents 100 percent of its U.S. electricity consumption in 2014. This REC purchase supports U.S. wind power and will avoid Hasbro’s GHG emissions equal to growing 164,767 trees for 10 years or taking 1,353 cars off the road for one year.

Newly renovated office space showcases company’s commitment to environmental sustainability and fosters creativity and collaboration

PAWTUCKET, R.I. – Hasbro, Inc. (NASDAQ: HAS) today announced that it has earned a LEED® Silver tenant improvement certification by the U.S. Green Building Council for its newly-renovated 80,000 square foot office in Burbank, CA. The building features design elements that reduce energy consumption, improve air quality and employ sustainable materials. This new certification complements the existing LEED® Gold certification of the building and demonstrates Hasbro’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint and preference for operating in LEED® certified buildings, including its Providence, RI and Miami, FL facilities.

Renovations to the Burbank workspace were designed to serve employee health and comfort, support Hasbro’s creative and collaborative culture, and advance our commitment to environmental sustainability. Hasbro’s new Burbank office features:

  • Ventilation control systems that monitor carbon dioxide levels and circulate fresh air to maintain a healthy interior environment, while helping reduce energy demand.
  •  LED lighting throughout the facility, which use less electricity compared with fluorescent bulbs.
  •  Lighting controls that automatically measure natural light and dim the LED fixtures accordingly, further reducing electricity consumption.
  •  Energy efficient building systems and Energy Star® rated appliances.

“This achievement speaks to our goal of being a great place to work for top creative talent in Southern California,” said Stephen Davis, executive vice president and chief content officer, Hasbro, Inc.

“Sustainability is important to us, as an organization, and to our employees. We have designed a space here in Burbank that reflects our employees’ bold and creative spirit, as well as our shared commitment to minimizing our impact on the environment.”

The Hasbro Burbank renovation made use of sustainable materials to further reduce the facility’s environmental footprint. Over 80 percent of construction debris was diverted from the landfill and recycled. Additionally, 36 percent of all construction materials contain recycled content, including carpet, gypsum wallboard and composites. All paints, adhesives, carpet, composites and furniture were certified as emitting low or zero VOCs.

Hasbro also ranked No. 1 on Newsweek Magazine’s Green Ranking for 2016.

“The goal of our renovation was to provide our employees a world-class workspace that fosters creativity and collaboration while also supporting Hasbro’s sustainability and wellness objectives, said Homy Eslamy, vice president, Corporate Real Estate and Facilities. “We are proud to earn this LEED® Silver distinction and will continue to embed environmental stewardship across our global real estate portfolio.”

Answers to your Questions

At Hasbro, we welcome your input and believe in being open and transparent about our global operations and business activities. Below are some commonly asked questions and responses to issues that have been brought to our attention. If you have any questions that are not addressed below or in our CSR Report, please contact us at CSR@hasbro.com.

General FAQs

Hasbro is proud of its deep and long-standing commitment to product safety. All of our products meet or exceed not only applicable federal and international standards but also our additional, internal standards. To ensure compliance with our high standards, Hasbro requires tests and quality control checks at multiple stages of the manufacturing process. These procedures, which have been in place for years, have always included – and continue to include – independent, third-party testing of our products.

Over the past several years, we have not issued any safety recalls of Hasbro products due to lack of compliance with our manufacturing processes or safety standards. Furthermore, we are proud that during the toy industry crisis of 2007 when millions of toys had to be recalled around the world because they contained lead paint and hazardous magnets, none of Hasbro's products were affected, and consumers could purchase them with confidence. As a safety conscious company, Hasbro has processes and systems in place to ensure that, once products reach consumers' hands, their use and potential safety concerns are being carefully monitored. In the event that Hasbro determines that a recall or other corrective action is necessary to protect consumers, we take prompt action. In these circumstances, Hasbro has established comprehensive systems to advise consumers, retailers, and applicable authorities across the globe.

Hasbro has a comprehensive, global quality assurance program designed to prevent lead paint and other quality and safety issues. We believe this is why Hasbro was not one of the companies that had to recall products during the toy industry crisis of 2007 when millions of toys had to be recalled around the world due to lead paint. Hasbro was proud that all of its products were not only compliant but also safe and consumers could purchase them with confidence. Our programs in this area include: paint testing processes (for paint prior to its application to Hasbro products), safety and quality control checks at multiple stages of the manufacturing process, and independent, third-party testing of products imported from Asia.

PVC is a widely used durable material that can be found in everyday products, from plumbing pipes, drinking water supply lines, and medical devices (e.g. blood bags, catheters, dialysis equipment, examination gloves, etc.) to vinyl siding and vinyl flooring for homes, car interiors, upholstery, shower curtains and clothing.

With respect to the use of PVC and phthalates in toys and childcare items, Hasbro has carefully considered the science, together with the toy industry and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission through its Chronic Hazard Advisory Panel (CHAP), and the European Union Commission's Chemicals Bureau Agency; based on these comprehensive government studies, we firmly believe that toys and childcare articles made from PVC and softened with phthalates pose no health risk to children. Nevertheless, all Hasbro toys and childcare items comply with all applicable global laws and regulations, including phthalates restrictions set forth in the European Union Phthalates Directive and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA).

Hasbro takes its responsibility to ensure human rights are being upheld in our supply chain very seriously. We are committed to addressing worker rights issues

proactively through our ethical sourcing program,

including oversight audits, and examining any allegations immediately, putting corrective action plans in place when necessary. This is a continuous journey and requires collaboration and cooperation among all stakeholders.

In October 2016, Hasbro reaffirmed our commitment to corporate responsibility and became the first global play and entertainment company to join the Responsible Business Alliance (formerly known as EICC), a nonprofit group of leading companies working together to improve efficiency and social, ethical and environmental sustainability in the global supply chain. The RBA is globally recognized as a leader in supply chain sustainability, which includes human rights, as well as conflict minerals, environmental sustainability, and many other existing and emerging issues. Its members include leaders from the electronics, retail and automotive sectors.

A recurring problem the toy industry faces in Asia is inaccurate record keeping at the factory-level, making the verification of proper wages and working hours difficult. In addition, due to the detailed nature of industry and company health and safety requirements, it is not uncommon for factories to require improvement in this area. When instances of non-compliance are found, Hasbro works with factories to address the issues and prevent further non-compliance. Once again, however, if a supplier demonstrates an inability to address shortfalls and meet our standards, we terminate our relationship with that factory.

Responses to Stakeholder Reports and Inquiries

Product safety is a top priority at Hasbro, and our rigorous and stringent quality assurance and safety standards apply to all Hasbro products, everywhere they are sold around the world. As per our assessment, the product at issue is properly age graded and fully compliant with the applicable EU safety standards as certified by an independent accredited laboratory for safety. We are in discussions with the Austrian authority to take down the notification.

Product safety is a top priority at Hasbro, and our rigorous and stringent quality assurance and safety standards apply to all Hasbro products. The product at issue is fully compliant with the applicable EU safety standard as determined by an independent, 3rd party EU accredited laboratory. The assessment from the local market surveillance authority in Croatia does not accurately reflect the applicable EU standard. Following our intervention and explanation to Croatian authorities, they agreed that it was a misinterpretation of the respective standards and, subsequently, the notification was taken down on October 29, 2021.

Project Veritas' report dated July 19, 2021 mischaracterizes Hasbro and our values. Our mission is to entertain and connect generations of fans through the wonder of storytelling and the exhilaration of play. We occasionally invite third-party speakers for optional sessions to discuss diverse viewpoints. The referenced session was not mandatory training; it was an optional webinar attended by a small group of employees. As always, the views expressed by external speakers are their own and do not reflect the views of the company.

With our portfolio of 1,500 brands that are a part of pop culture and the daily lives of families around the world, we are aware that from time-to-time, publications and other groups create spoof products and fake announcements that may appear to be from Hasbro.

For example, we are aware of the satirical post from Babylon Bee citing a Playskool 'My First Knife Fight' Playset. This is not a real Hasbro product and our company did not make any of the comments cited in the article.

Please be assured we are not affiliated in any way with these satirical posts, products or announcements, and these are not real Hasbro products. We encourage any consumers who have questions about our products or company to reach out to our Global Consumer Care team [here].

Hasbro has a long tradition of being a responsible corporate citizen, and as a company that creates products for children and families, we take our responsibility seriously to develop toys and games that contribute positively to their development and society at large.

If you’re interested in learning more, please review our latest Corporate Social Responsibility report available [here].

In August of 2020, Hasbro responded quickly to consumer concerns about the placement of a sensor on a Trolls doll that, while unintentional, may have been perceived as inappropriate. We swiftly removed the product from sale and offered consumers a refund upon learning of the concern. Additionally, we conducted a thorough review of our products and implemented company-wide training to underscore employees' responsibility to assess our content through a highly sensitized lens. As a company, we are committed to continuous improvement and embracing every day as an opportunity to fulfill our purpose.

Product safety is a top priority at Hasbro, and our rigorous and stringent quality assurance and safety standards apply to all Hasbro products. In 2020, through our robust checks and balances, we were made aware of a non-compliance in a small number of Super Soaker blasters and immediately took steps to recall the products. We recalled two models of Super Soaker blasters because some of the stickers on the blasters contained lead in excess of limits.

The issue arose when a supplier in India sourced decorative stickers from an unauthorized supplier, in violation of Hasbro’s quality assurance requirements. Upon learning that some of the stickers’ ink contained levels of lead in excess of regulatory limits, we promptly announced a recall of the blasters in all the markets in which they were sold. There were no injuries associated with the stickers, which presented a low toxicological risk. Finally, as part of our steadfast commitment to continuous improvement, we put corrective actions in place with the manufacturer and launched re-training across all manufacturers in our entire supply chain to reinforce the importance of strict adherence to our quality assurance procedures and requirements.

You can read more about Hasbro’s product safety standards and CSR efforts in our latest 2019-2020 Corporate Social Responsibility Update and in our previous, comprehensive 2016 Corporate Social Responsibility Report.

Ethical Sourcing is a top priority at Hasbro. We are dedicated to ensuring every worker in our supply chain is treated with dignity and respect and is working in safe, fair, and legal working conditions. Hasbro has a rigorous ethical sourcing program, which includes unannounced annual audits and follow-up remediation at each of our third-party suppliers, including licensee factories.

Upon becoming aware of the 2019 China Labor Watch Report (“CLW”), Hasbro conducted an immediate investigation and determined that production of products for Hasbro or our licensees was occurring in two (2) of the five (5) named factories: Everfront and Dongguan Kongxing. Following a rigorous review of recent oversight audits and on-the-ground engagement at both factories, we have determined that the majority of the CLW allegations were unsubstantiated or have been remediated. As with all of our third-party facilities, we continue to work closely with these factories to elevate working conditions and human rights, including monthly in-person training sessions re: important issues such as overtime hours, effective worker communication channels, protection of female workers, enhancements to dormitories, and worker well-being.

Product safety is a top priority at Hasbro. All of our products meet or exceed our rigorous and stringent quality assurance and product safety standards. The product at issue is fully compliant with all applicable EU and global product safety and acoustic standards as determined by an independent, 3rd party EU accredited as well as other global laboratories. We believe the Finnish position is in error and have requested that the notification be taken down.

Ethical Sourcing is a top priority at Hasbro. We are dedicated to ensuring every worker in our supply chain is treated with dignity and respect and is working in safe, fair, and legal working conditions. Hasbro has a rigorous ethical sourcing monitoring program, which includes unannounced audits at each of our third-party suppliers. We have reviewed the China Labor Watch report and can confirm that Hasbro products are manufactured at two of the facilities mentioned, Jetta and Herald. The allegations in the report are not substantiated by Hasbro’s extensive monitoring and audits conducted throughout 2018, and both suppliers are in good standing with Hasbro’s robust ethical souring requirements. Finally, Hasbro is deeply committed to advancing female factory workers and has two programs in place across its supply chain to help them succeed both within the workplace and in their daily lives.

Ethical Sourcing is a top priority at Hasbro and we are dedicated to ensuring that every worker in our supply chain is working in a healthy and safe environment and is treated with dignity and respect. On August 21, 2018, New York-based NGO, China Labor Watch (CLW), released a report alleging poor labor practices at Shaoguan Early Light. Once we became aware of the report, we immediately conducted a robust, multi-day investigation. The results of the investigation confirmed that the majority of the CLW allegations could not be substantiated. However, we recognize that social compliance is a continuous improvement process and, as with all Hasbro factories, we engage extensively with factory management and require all factories undergo regular and continuous training and education. Hasbro’s commitment to Ethical Sourcing remains paramount.

Product safety is a top priority at Hasbro, and our rigorous and stringent quality assurance and safety standards apply to all Hasbro products, including licensed products. We work closely with our licensees to ensure they understand and comply with Hasbro’s stringent product safety requirements. This particular product was produced by Leap Year, a licensee, and sold at Dollar Tree. Both Leap Year and Dollar Tree tested these products and found no traces of asbestos. Additionally, as soon as Hasbro learned of the allegations, Hasbro initiated its own independent investigation, including sending the crayons to an independent, third party laboratory accredited by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, and these independent testing results confirmed there was no detectable asbestos in the product. Hasbro has concluded that the allegations are without merit.

Hasbro’s commitment to Ethical Sourcing is steadfast and unwavering, and we take allegations regarding working conditions incredibly seriously. Our review of the China Labor Watch (CLW) Report (published November 27, 2017) determined that Hasbro production was occurring in only one of the named factories— Shaoguan Early Light—and we immediately sent a leading, independent, third-party social compliance firm to conduct an unannounced, multi-day audit, including more than 200 off-site worker interviews. Hasbro had also previously conducted multiple comprehensive, multi-day, social compliance audits of Shaoguan Early Light in calendar year 2017. Our findings to date have not substantiated the majority of the CLW allegations. Over this period of time and on an ongoing basis, we have been continuously and extensively engaging with Early Light factory management, including on the ground in China, to drive continuous improvement. Our commitment to Ethical Sourcing remains paramount.

At Hasbro, we are deeply committed to protecting the privacy of our audiences and delivering a safe and enjoyable experience online, and thus applaud the New York Attorney General’s prosecution of TRUSTe. Hasbro ended its relationship with TRUSTe in 2014. Hasbro was the only company not fined in the 2016 settlement because of our use of an FTC-approved safe harbor program.

Hasbro is committed to corporate social responsibility and conducting its business in accordance with high ethical and business standards. We know that when consumers choose Hasbro toys and games, it’s an act of trust that our products are manufactured safely, under fair labor conditions, and without ethical compromises. Hasbro combines industry best practices, strategic partnerships, and strict auditing standards to respect the safety, well-being, and dignity of workers, and works continuously to ensure compliance with all third-party manufacturing facilities. We utilize the ICTI CARE process as well as our own rigorous ethical sourcing practices to ensure that employees at all third-party facilities have a healthy and safe working environment.

We are aware of the Institute for Global Labor and Human Rights (IGLHR) report “Dirty Toys Made in China,” dated December 2015. We take all allegations regarding our ethical sourcing program very seriously and promptly investigated the IGLHR report. We performed an unannounced factory inspection on December 14, 2015 and confirmed that no Hasbro product was being produced in this facility. While Zhenyang Wanju had been a third-party supplier to Hasbro in the past, they have not supplied Hasbro products since 2014.

At Hasbro, we appreciate IGLHR’s and other organizations’ sharing information about toy factory conditions and welcome the opportunity to work together toward the shared goal of ensuring human rights are being upheld throughout our supply chain.

For more about Hasbro’s commitment to corporate social responsibility and ethical sourcing practices please visit www.hasbro.com/csr.

We are aware of the China Labor Watch report and take their allegations very seriously. We require all Hasbro products to be manufactured in accordance with rigorous ethical standards, and that all third-party facilities ensure employees have a healthy and safe working environment. Hasbro combines industry best practices, strategic partnerships, and strict auditing standards to respect the safety, well-being, and dignity of workers, and works continuously to ensure compliance with all third-party facilities. We are working closely with the ICTI CARE Foundation, which is conducting a thorough investigation at the five factories covered in the China Labor Watch report.

January 2016: ICTI CARE Foundation conducted an investigation into the allegations and published their findings.

Hasbro’s response to Institute for Global Labour and Human Right Report: Holidays by Hasbro, Transformers from Hell:
December 22, 2011:  Immediately following some unsubstantiated allegations posted by an outside group regarding working conditions at the Jet Fair factory, Hasbro, together with ICTI, deployed a team to investigate, as we take such claims very seriously.

We strive to conduct business throughout our supply chain in accordance with the highest ethical standards, and we utilize not only ICTI – but also our own on-the-ground workforce–  to monitor social compliance.
